Limited Edition Vs Open Edition Prints: Key Differences

Limited Edition Vs Open Edition Prints: Key Differences

I am often asked about the key differences between limited edition signed prints and open edition prints and how their differences affect the price points. Understanding these distinctions is crucial whether you are an avid art collector or someone who appreciates fine art for home decor

Limited Edition Giclée Prints are a luxurious option for collectors. The limited supply available means that these prints are inherently more exclusive and thus more expensive. This exclusivity is further enhanced by the artist’s signature and embossed watermark on each print.

My limited edition prints are supplied with a certificate of authenticity. This provides assurance that the print is one of a limited number of either 50, 100 or 250, enhancing its value and desirability in the secondary art market. Once the limited collection has sold out, the print will never be reproduced again. This means collectors can be confident that their investment is both unique and valuable. My signed print 'Old Milltown' has been a great success as a limited run of 250 copies, and continues to be one of my best-selling prints.

"Limited editions from established artists have the potential to appreciate in value over time. Not only do they bring joy to the buyer, but they are also an investment opportunity"

Open Edition Prints

Open edition prints offer a more accessible way for people to enjoy art. With no limit on the number of prints that can be produced, these prints are typically much more affordable. I can print and sell as many of these images as I wish, on any material or medium for an unlimited length of time. However, affordability doesn’t mean a compromise in quality. I use Hahnemühle Fine Art Bamboo Paper for all my prints, ensuring that even my affordable open edition prints maintain a high standard of quality.

A Meticulous Process

Creating archival prints is expensive. The main cost involves a process known as "proofing". During proofing, several test prints are made to ensure the colors, tones and details are perfect. This process ensures that each print is a true representation of the original artwork. Once this is all set up, each time a print is ordered, unique profile settings are applied to ensure the same result is produced every time.

My print provider The Print Space have professional print hubs in the UK, Germany and USA. Rated number one for their print quality, they are used by professional artists and photographers globally. Having multiple locations both in the EU and USA allows my customers to avoid expensive customs charges on delivery. Outsourcing the printing and delivery of my prints will be a game changer for me. My time and energy can be concentrated on creating art in my studio, instead of dashing to the post office!

As an artist, my primary goal is to share my creations with as many people as possible. Offering both limited and open edition prints will allow me to reach a broader audience. Collectors have the option to invest in art that may appreciate in value over the years, while others can choose more affordable prints that enhance their living spaces with high-quality visuals
